NSQ on tour: Day 3
Today we had the unique opportunity to explore underground tunnels near the Chemin des Dames. These tunnels are not open to the public but through Dan's connections in France we were able to visit them!
The area was occupied by Germans, French and Americans at various points in the war. Each nationality left behind art, artefacts and graffiti that tell a fascinating story.
Below: A spectacular sailing ship carved in chalk by a French soldier (pictured nearby).
Below: Graffiti of Kaiser Wilhelm and Uncle Sam drawn by an unknown US soldier.
Below: American names and unit numbers carved into the wall, alongside a lurid carved & painted skull.
